NYC Proto Punk Legend Adny Shernoff Re-emerges

Seminal NYC proto-punk Andy Shernoff is releasing a new 7” vinyl single
“Are You Ready To Rapture” c/w “Make Me Tremble” (the latter co-written
with Andy’s dear friend, the late Joey Ramone). “Are You Ready To Rapture”
will be accompanied by an animated video created by world famous
cartoonist Brian Musikoff which you can view here: Are You Ready To Rapture?

Shernoff grew up in New York City, in the Queens neighborhood of Jackson
Heights. He attended elementary school with Johnny Thunders and Flushing
High School with the Fleshtones. After high school, he attended the SUNY
New Paltz Music Department. There he started the music magazine The
Teenage Wasteland Gazette, known for its sarcastic, wise-guy attitude. The
publication's contributors included famed rock critic Lester Bangs, who
invited Andy to write for Creem magazine. Shernoff's early profession of
choice was rock journalist.

Shernoff went on to become a musician, songwriter, record producer and
oenophile.  He  is a founding member of The Dictators, one of the seminal
New York proto-punk bands, for which he composed the lion’s share of the
material, played bass guitar, keyboards, sang back-up and occasional lead
vocals. He has been involved with a variety of other musical projects over
the years, most notably the heavily Dictators-populated Manitoba's Wild
Kingdom and Joey Ramone's sole solo studio album, Don't Worry About Me.

In the fall of 2009, he embarked upon a series of solo shows playing songs
he wrote or co-wrote and telling the stories behind them. In the spring of
2010, those shows would become "When Giants Walked the Earth - A Musical
Memoir by Adny Shernoff," with several tour dates scheduled in the Eastern
U.S. and Canada. Shernoff sang "California Sun" in the official Major
League Baseball promotional video for the 2010 All-Star Game. Other
projects include garage-rock band The Masterplan, featuring members of The
Fleshtones and the Waxing Poetics.

His songs have been recorded by The Ramones, Mary Weiss (of the
Shangri-Las), Dion DiMucci, Carolyne Mas, Turbonegro, The Hellacopters,
Drivin 'N' Cryin, The Del-Lords, Toilet Böys, Young Fresh Fellows, The
A-Bones, The Nomads, The Untamed Youth, The Fastbacks, The Vikings, The
Streetwalkin Cheetahs, Texas Terri, Tom Clark, The Screaming Tribesman,
The Meatmen, Electric Frankenstein, The Prissteens, The Alter Boys, Metal
Mike Saunders (Angry Samoans), Furious George, Corpus Christi, Jeff Dahl
to name but a few.

As producer he has worked with The Dictators, The Master Plan, Manitoba's
Wild Kingdom, The Barracudas, The Untamed Youth, D Generation, Adrenalin
OD, The Smithereens, Prisonshake, Guided by Voices, Sibling Rivalry with
Joey Ramone & Mickey Leigh, The Zantees with Billy Miller and Miriam
Linna, Sic F*cks with Tish and Snooky, The Kowalskis, The Figgs, and The
Golden Horde, among others.

As both a journalist and a musician, Andy Shernoff is often credited as
"Adny Shernoff," a deliberate typo transposing the second and third
letters of his name. Shernoff has never explained the reasoning behind
this stylistic quirk.

THE FALL "Ersatz G.B." to be Released on CD in the US on December 6, 2011 via Cherry Red Records and MVD

Ersatz G.B. is the new studio album from The Fall, the 29th in their impressive canon. As with any Fall recording, Ersatz G.B. retains many of the group's most distinctive elements, whilst offering a fresh take on Mark E. Smith's familiar style and subject matter.

The line-up on the album remains the same as for the last few Fall releases: Peter Greenway (lead guitar), Keiron Melling (drums), Elena Poulou (keyboards, vocals), Mark E. Smith (vocals) and David Spurr (bass).

Ersatz G.B. is The Fall's first album for Cherry Red Records and it will be released on CD, limited edition vinyl and digital formats, preceded by a double A-side 7" single.

There aren't very many groups that have been together longer than The Fall and it's difficult to think of any who, like The Fall, have released brand new material almost every year. Formed at the height of the punk rock movement in Manchester in 1976, The Fall is essentially built around its founder and only constant member Mark E. Smith. The group's music has gone through several stylistic changes over the years but it is often characterised by an abrasive, guitar-driven sound and frequent use of repetition, and is always underpinned by Smith's distinctive vocals and often cryptic lyrics.

The Fall were long associated with BBC disc jockey John Peel, who championed the group from the very early days and often cited them as his favourite group, famously opining, "they are always different; they are always the same."

The Stooges: Head On - A Journey Through the Michigan Underground

If the MC5 were Detroit's political spokesmen for the disenchanted youth of the 1960s, then the Stooges were the loutish kids, heckling from the back of the room. While conventional wisdom says they could barely play their instruments, the Stooges left an indelible mark on the world of punk rock, and the band's initial three albums-The Stooges, Fun House and Raw Power-are bona fide classics. In The Stooges: Head On author Brett Callwood treats the band's story not just as an early chapter in the career of its famous front man, Iggy Pop, but from the Stooges' beginnings at the end of the 1960s, to its end in the early 1970s, and to its reunion in 2003 through the present.

"Writing a Stooges biography was a no-brainer for me," Callwood states. "My first book is about the MC5 and in researching that while still living in London, I had traveled to Detroit / Ann Arbor and fallen in love with the whole area and its music. I had made many friends and established many contacts that were and are associated with both the MC5 and the Stooges, so that made the process easier to get started. Also, when I wrote this book there wasn't a decent Stooges book on the shelves. There are a lot of Iggy books out there, but mine is the first full Stooges biography."

In compiling this exhaustive account of the band's history, Callwood interviewed all of the central and sometimes Stooges members, including Iggy Pop, Ron and Scott Asheton, James Williamson, Mike Watt, Steve Mackay, and Scott Thurston, and largely lets the band tell its own story in numerous long quotes. Callwood details the band's genesis as teenage friends in Ann Arbor, their time living together in their legendary party houses in the 1960s, and the recording of the three original Stooges albums. He examines the addition of James Williamson to the band on Raw Power and how it changed the band's sound and dynamic, along with the band's fateful meeting with David Bowie on its first British tour.

As Iggy broke out as a solo artist during the 1970s and 1980s, Callwood charts the Asheton brothers' post-Stooges experiences, with Ron's turns in The New Order, Destroy All Monsters, and Dark Carnival, and Scott Asheton's time with the Farleys and Sonic's Rendezvous Band. He also provides an overview of Iggy's solo career, the seeds of a reunion that were planted with a collaboration on Iggy's Skull Ring album, and the eventual reformation of the band and the recording of their fourth album, The Weirdness, in 2007.

Originally published in the U.K. in 2007, The Stooges: Head On has been revised to expand on the original story and also to consider Ron Asheton's untimely death in 2009 and his musical legacy, the band's fate without Ron, and the Stooges' long-overdue introduction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

"Scott didn't want to talk at all for the first edition... He rarely does interviews," said Callwood. "However, after his brother passed away and I was writing for this American edition, he talked to me and really opened up. It was a very moving, humbling experience."

Iggy and the band sound flawless as they rip through the archetype riffage of "Search and Destroy," "Raw Power," "Gimmie Danger" and more.

"Getting this top-notch performance of the entire Raw Power album by The Stooges realized a life long dream," Iggy Pop "This shit really sizzles and we are so obviously a crack band in a class of our own."

Dead Kennedys Furious With Heineken Over Un-Authorized Use Of Music To Promote Beer

As recently reported by NME, The Guardian, AOL Spinner, NY Press, and a host of other news agencies, Heineken was forced to remove an advert which features a cover of the Dead Kennedys' 'Too Drunk To Fuck' because of complaints it would encourage binge drinking. Heineken had used the song in a commercial tie-in to promote its beer in banner advertisements broadcast via the popular music website Spotify.

Spotify had been running a series of banner advertisements, which directed users to a special "lounge style" playlist as part of a campaign for the beer Kronenbourg 1664.

One of the tracks used was the Dead Kennedys' 'Too Drunk To Fuck', which attracted a number of complaints to the independent industry watchdog, The Portman Group. The complaints were then investigated and were found to be in breach of a rule which bans advertisers from "encouraging irresponsible or immoderate drinking".

Dead Kennedys emphatically deny that they ever gave Heineken permission to use the song. The band's attorneys have contacted Heineken to address the un-authorized use. Dead Kennedys have never authorized any company to use this song or any of the band's songs to promote a consumer product (let alone the consumption of alcohol) in this or any advertisement

Brian Eno "1971 - 1977 : The Man Who Fell To Earth" on DVD May 17

Brian Peter George St. John le Baptiste de la Salle Eno - Brian to his friends, Eno to the rest of us - defies categorisation. Musician, composer, record producer, music theorist, singer and visual artist covers some of what he does, but he's probably best known for his early work with Roxy Music, his production duties for U2 and Coldplay and as one of the principal innovators of ambient music. But however he's pigeon-holed, this remarkable, creative visionary remains amongst the most influential individuals to have ever worked within the music industry.

This documentary film - the first ever about Eno - explores his life, career and music between the years 1971 and 1977, the period that some view as his golden age, others as just one era in a long, extraordinary and very eclectic career.

Featuring numerous exclusive interviews, contributions from a range of musicians, writers [including his official biographer], colleagues, collaborators and friends - plus archive footage, performance and studio film and an abundance of arguably the most exceptional music ever created.

Also contains many extra features including extended interviews, digital biographies and more.

1ST ANNUAL POWER POP-A-LICIOUS! MUSIC FEST KICKS-OFF IN ASBURY PARK 4/30 & 5/01

The first Power Pop-A-Licious Music Festival will take place on Saturday April 30th & Sunday May 1st at the legendary rock club Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park, NJ. Conceived and curated by power pop legend Paul Collins (cofounder of THE NERVES, THE BREAKAWAYS and THE BEAT) the fest will bring together some of the finest young guitar-driven power pop, garage rock and punk-pop bands from across the U.S. and Canada. Power Pop-A-Licious is a unifying rally cry for this thriving rock-n-roll subculture, and is a means for power pop fans of all ages to discover a wealth of talented new music acts in one power-packed weekend.

Collins explains the concept behind the festival, "I was touring all over the country with my Beat Army Tours, when it hit me, I gotta bring all these great bands I'm playing with together for one crazy weekend!"

This all-ages event is ground zero for a burgeoning DIY power pop scene that's been fueled by the immediacy of the Internet, the devotion of its fans, and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.  Each day will feature bands from different regions of the country, with local DJs spinning sets to create an all-day dance party atmosphere.  Similar in approach to “happenings” in 1960's London, Power Pop-A-Licious is no mere rock n’ roll concert, it’s an event.  DJs, performance artist’s video projections, and, of course, the spirited, high-energy live rock-n-roll performances from all these great new bands will provide the entertainment. The world-famous Asbury Lanes, where the two day fest will take place, is a vintage bowling alley, bar and live music venue with a capacity of 300, and is located in the heart of beautiful Asbury Park.

PAUL COLLINS may just be Power Pop's greatest champion and spokesperson. Through extensive worldwide touring, and connecting to like-minded bands, artists and fans through social networking sites, Paul has created THE BEAT ARMY, a DIY network of people connected by their love of power pop, punk, new wave and rock-n-roll to help ensure its success at the club level - where rock-n-roll lives and breathes. While THE BEAT ARMY only began last March, Collins has already amassed over 2,700 members. In addition, he's been touring heavily in support of both THE BEAT ARMY and his new album KING OF POWER POP! (on Alive Records). "Since forming THE BEAT ARMY we've done 50-plus shows throughout the South, Canada, East Coast, Midwest and the West Coast involving over 60 bands from around the country," Collins states. "The shows all have low ticket prices (averaging from $8 to $10) and we book them ourselves. 'By the people, for the people'... that's our motto."
